The Glow standard

Safety & care.

Thoughtful learning. Responsible design.

Learning should feel welcoming. Caring for the information behind that learning is part of the same responsibility. These principles guide the design, operation, and release of Glow Math Facts, Glow Sight Words, and Glow Math & Logic.

  1. Adults guide the experience

Children learn; adults manage accounts, permissions, purchases, and sharing. Our standard requires permission appropriate to the setting: a parent or guardian for home learning, or verified school authorization for school educational use. A tutor needs permission from each learner's parent or guardian. Permission to learn, subscription agreement, and newsletter signup are separate choices.

  2. Collect for a clear purpose

Every piece of personal information needs a defined purpose, responsible owner, storage location, and retention period. Learner profiles use nicknames and usernames instead of requiring children's email addresses. Learning records support practice and adult reporting. We ask adults to keep sensitive personal details out of teaching notes and support messages.

  3. Keep the learning environment private

Learner information belongs in the learning experience. Our standard excludes selling it, using it for targeted advertising, or sharing it for AI model training. External services and requests are reviewed for necessity, and website fonts and artwork are served with Glow wherever practical.

  4. Protect private input

Passwords, payment details, teaching notes, and children's responses are not material for advertising analytics or session replay. Our standard requires minimal operational logging and protection of private fields. Optional device features should have a clear purpose, an understandable permission request, and a usable alternative.

  5. Give families meaningful control

Permission includes a way to review records, withdraw permission, and request deletion. A learner's record is available to the supervising adult for appropriate export and sharing. Retention follows a written schedule tied to a specific purpose, with deletion procedures covering active records and the handling of recovery copies.

  6. Make subscriptions understandable

Before purchase, adults should see the price, billing period, introductory offer, renewal price, and cancellation terms. Our standard requires an affirmative choice, a record of that choice, a purchase confirmation, and a straightforward way to manage or cancel. Purchase access and permission to collect learner information remain separate.

  7. Keep communications optional and useful

Marketing is an adult choice. It should identify the sender, include appropriate business contact details, and provide a working unsubscribe option. Essential account, security, and purchase messages serve their specific purpose and are kept separate from promotional subscriptions.

  8. Protect access and review security

Adults and learners should reach only the records they are allowed to use. Our release standard includes checks of sign-in, account separation, permissions, secret handling, dependencies, logging, and recovery. Sensitive credentials belong on the server. Security reports receive a responsible review and a corrective action when needed.

  9. Respect creative work

Code, fonts, illustrations, audio, lessons, and other assets need documented origin and suitable rights. Required open-source notices accompany the work. Our standard includes reviewing AI-generated assets for their intended use and handling copyright concerns through a documented process appropriate to the product's content features.

  10. Design for access and responsible release

Clear text, readable contrast, keyboard controls, touch interaction, and assistive-technology support are part of the design standard. Accessibility work is guided by WCAG 2.2. Website and app releases also include checks of relevant platform requirements, privacy disclosures, permissions, purchase restoration, and account deletion.
